Reminisce

In Reminisce, Christopher Cerrone’s work Memory Palace acts as a framing device, creating a steady through-line for the recital. Personally, I imagine these interspersed movements to invoke the image of a person in their living space (whether the performer or the listener) who is reflecting on moments from their past. The other three works represent “flashbacks” and serve as prompts for the listener’s reflection. The listener is encouraged to engage in this reflective practice. The performance is structured so that the first “prompt” is more concrete with Ceci n’est pas une balle and slowly abstracts to allow the listener’s mind to wander into a path unique to them.

The bouncing ball…

This abstraction is shown through the image of a bouncing ball, which is present in nearly every work in the program. It is most concrete in Ceci n’est pas une balle, but is referenced throughout the other two “flashback” works both musically and through physical gesture. Additionally, it is hidden even more abstractly in the third and fourth movements of Memory Palace. Through this imagery, the colors of each work begin to run and smear into one another, transitioning more and more fluidly from one to the next as the performance goes on.
